History
abounds at Oar House Bed and Breakfast in Newport, Oregon.
After a shipwreck off the coast washed an abundance of timber ashore,
Mr. Bradshaw, the builder, drove his horse and wagon down the street
to the beach to haul up the lumber to construct Oar House.
Tax records indicate the house was built in 1900, but it probably
took the builder more than a year to construct the L-shaped house
of approximately 5,000 square feet. Upon completion, the Bradshaws
opened a boarding house with room for 30 boarders. In the 1920s,
the building became the Nye Beach bordello. In 1980 new owners added
the lighthouse tower and incorporated nautical paraphernalia, and
in 1987 they decided to open a B&B with two guest rooms and call
it Oar House, a play on words relative to its history and
new nautical theme.
The
current owners purchased the property in 1992 and expanded from two
guest rooms to four. Each year they engage in a new renovation project.
Today, guests find all the modern amenities one expects in a first-class
Bed and Breakfast along with Jan and Keith's personal collections
that include international art, sculptures, Persian carpets, Oriental
objets d'art, eclectic ensembles, a large library (each room has
books and periodicals), and the inherited nautical paraphernalia.
